Hello. My name is Ferris Akrabawi and this is my simple website. I'm a math teacher and not a web developer, so let's just manage our expectations. For now, at least, this is just a place for you to get to know me just a little bit better.

Enjoy.

Algebra for the win!: 90% of our 8th grade algebra students passed the algebra exit exam, earning high school credit for Algebra I and the opportunity to begin their high school math careers with geometry. Congratulations! This is the highest number of students moving up that our school has ever had.

A special note to my students: Congratulations on finishing another year! In 2021-22 we started to get back to normal and while I understand this was a unique challenge, I believe you all handled it well.

To my 8th graders, I wish you nothing but success in high school. Our school is a unique one. Never before have I had the opportunity to be a math teacher for one group for so many years. It's hard to imagine that those little kids I met four years ago are now going to be high school freshmen!

I hope you all enjoy a restful summer!

Highlights

2022

April - We went on a cruise ship vacation for spring break. Here's the short version: Flight was canceled Saturday morning.

  1. We missed the boat. The kid's two best friends, their families, everyone made the boat. This was supposed to be a birthday party for my wife. Very bad situation.

  2. We find out that we can join up with the boat on Wednesday in Cozumel.

  3. We book a flight and hotel Saturday night.

  4. Sunday we are in Cozumel by way of Denver.

  5. Swimming, kayaking, diving, eating.

  6. Wednesday we are reunited with our friends.

The big takeaway: ALWAYS purchase trip insurance.

2021 see 2021

:( I mean, COME ON!

2020

March - Chicago, IL Time to learn about viruses!

April - Chicago, IL Lots of bored eating.

May - Chicago, IL I got to know my family in new and exciting ways.

June - Chicago, IL Coined a new phrase: Quaranteaching. I went outside about 3 times.

July/August - Epic Road trip. Went on an EPIC ROAD TRIP, hitting parks, monuments and forests in MN, SD, WY, MT, ID, UT, and CO. Finally marked KS on the states visited list! One night in IA and we made it home. That was 9 states, 5 national parks, 2 national monuments and one unforgettable I love lists.

2019

April - Another trip to my in-laws in Monterrey, CA! It's beautiful out there but nothing beats the hustle and brawn of Chicago!

June/July - Boise, ID Helped move one of my best friends across the country. Visited SD, WY, MT, and ID for the first time -- not to mention a unique experience visiting the International Spam Museum in Austin, MN and a 5 hour flight delay in Salt Lake City, UT. I used to never count airports as states visited, but I ask you: Where was I for that whole time when I was in the airport? Utah. That's where. Utah.

August - Orlando, and Dunedin, FL Met up with my sister who took our daughter on an epic trip to Disney World. We got to see our good buddies Bob and Maria who now live the quiet life on Florida's Gulf Coast. Oh, and I got to go to Hogwarts!!!!!! At least it looked like Hogwarts. Lot's of German and Chinese tourists and I spent about $200 in muggle money for lunch. I'm starting to think that it wasn't at Hogwarts.

November - Washington, D.C. I finally got to take my family to D.C.! It was an amazing experience and we packed a ton into just a few days. Alexandria Ghost tour, Arlington, White House, Capital tour, National Archives, the Spy Museum we did it all! One highlight was that we got to use telescopes at the Air and Space Museum tan got to see the transit of Mercury! The next transit will occur on November 13, 2032!

December - Naperville, IL I didn't get the chance to go to Texas to see it in person, but I enjoyed the company of old friends and football teammates, and even some new friends as we gathered to watch as North Central College won the 2019 NCAA DIII FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP! The Cardinals avenged a bitter 2010 playoff loss over a solid UW-Whitewater team, 41-14. The mood was euphoric! I have never felt that sort of pride for a team as I did that night. My wife needed the car that day so I biked and took the train. That night, arriving on the last train of the evening, I began to ride my bike home. I saw I recent grad with an NCC stocking cap walking into Union Station as I was exiting. We yelled "Go Cardinals!" and "Champions, baby!" and high-fived in downtown Chicago. It's DIII. Absolutely no one but the two of us knew how big that day was for our boys!

2018

March - Detroit, MI Henry Ford Museum and Factory Tour. Forgot passport so we couldn't go to Canada. Hitsville USA tour was filled so no Motown fix. Still fun though.

April - Washington, D.C. and Gettysburg, PA So great - once again! This year's highlights include a first time visit to the new National Museum of African American History and Culture, a Vietnam veteran pulling me aside and thanking me for such well-dressed and respectful students at Arlington National Cemetery...

2017

August - Chester, IL Eclipse Trip!

October - Austin, TX Formula One USA Grand Prix, Texas vs. Oklahoma State (Oklahoma won in overtime), Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library

November - Memphis, TN American Civil Rights Museum

November - Auburn, AL Auburn vs. Alabama (The "Iron Bowl") Auburn won! War Eagle!)

December - Monterrey, CA Walk in the woods and see the in-laws!

IF my friends and I started a middle-aged boy band, which one should be the cover of our debut album? Discuss.
